The reason for this is laminate flooring, and whilst it does not have the advantage of carpet in that it feels nice and soft when you walk across it in bare feet, and it lacks that warm feel to it when you get out of bed in the morning, it does have some huge advantages (And a few disadvantages which we will come back to later).
The advantages that laminate floor has over carpet are several, not least of which is that laminate flooring is often far easier to keep clean, particularly the lighter shades of colour when compared to a carpet. It is all too easy to forget to take your shoes off and walk mud into a nice cream carpet, only to find that you cannot get the mud out easily without the aid of a professional carpet cleaner.
Yet mud on a laminate flooring, even a very light coloured one, can simply be cleaned up with a mop over, without any fuss at all.
In general laminate flooring is also very hard wearing when it comes to being scratch resistant (Although it will suffer badly if you wear stiletto heals on it on a regular basis).
And if you were wondering why it is called laminate flooring, it is because it is made up of a photographic layer of image of wood strips (Or even stone in some cases), placed under a clear protective layer (The laminate), this is then applied to a resin and fiberboard base.
You could go out and spend five times per square metre on buying real strip wood flooring, but in numerous tests simple laminate flooring has often been proven to wear better than solid wood strip wood flooring. And often when looked at from a normal height you would be hard pushed to see the difference between the two types of flooring.
The only disadvantage this type of flooring has is that if one board gets badly damaged then you may need to take up a lot of the floor to replace it. However with the most of this flooring now being of the "Clicklock" variety it is far easier to replace one damaged board than with the older style laminate flooring that was glued together, where one damaged board would mean a whole new floor!
